My Home Office Set-Up: Crafting the Perfect Remote Workspace (for me)
When I transitioned to full-time remote work, I quickly realised that my dining table just wasn’t going to cut it. I needed a space that was not only functional but also inspiring—a place where I could seamlessly switch between work and relaxation. After a lot of research, trial, and a few errors, I finally put together a home office that ticks all the boxes. Here’s a peek into my personal choices and the thought process behind creating a workspace that’s both efficient and enjoyable.
Furniture Choices
Desk
Working remotely meant I needed a dedicated workspace, not just a corner of the dining table. I opted for a fully adjustable standing desk that’s just one metre wide. This nifty little desk fits perfectly into the corner of my room, creating a clear boundary between work and personal life. The ability to switch between sitting and standing was a must for keeping myself healthy and productive.
Chair
Being 6'3" with long legs, finding the right chair was crucial. Enter the Herman Miller Sayl chair. It’s a visual delight and supports my posture brilliantly. While the Aeron chair might have offered a bit more adjustability, the Sayl’s design won me over.
Accessories for Comfort
To protect my desk and make mouse movements smoother, I added a desk mat. And because sitting is the new smoking, I got a standing mat to ease the strain of standing. I’m even considering a balance mat for some extra dynamic movement.
Storage Solutions
For storage, I got creative. I turned Hay boxes and flooring wheels into a four-shelf cabinet. This holds cables, files, and other bits and bobs, keeping my workspace tidy. On top, a Muji tray holds daily essentials like pens, sticky notes, and my walking pad remote.
Hardware Choices
Monitor and Mount
I love a good dual-screen setup, but I didn’t want my desk to feel cluttered. The LG dual monitor, with its vertically aligned screens, was the perfect solution. It saves space and the mount keeps it off the desk, preserving that clean, minimal look I crave.
Computer and Accessories
My trusty MacBook Pro 13 is my main workhorse. It sits snugly on a Twelve South BookArc Flex Vertical Desktop Stand, saving precious desk space. I’m sticking with the MacBook’s keyboard and mouse for now, but I’m eyeing an upgrade to a keyboard with Touch ID for convenience. And let’s not forget the MacBook touchpad – its tactile feedback is something I’m keen to add to my setup soon.
Communication Tools
Webcam and Microphone
Clear communication is key, so I went all out. The Insta360 4K webcam ensures I look sharp in every meeting. Paired with a Rode microphone and stand, I never have to deal with the “Can you hear me?” hassle again.
Audio
Good sound is a must, both for music and Zoom calls. The Audioengine A2 speakers deliver brilliant stereo sound, making meetings and music sessions equally enjoyable. Crisp audio means less strain and more effective communication.
Lighting and Cable Management
Lighting
To save my eyes from the strain of poor lighting, I invested in a BenQ lightbar. It keeps my workspace well-lit, especially during those gloomy winter days and late-night work sessions.
Cable Management
A phone and AirPods stand that doubles as a charger keeps wires to a minimum. Most cables are tucked away in a box under the desk, though I still have a bit of tidying up to do.
Unique Additions
Walking Treadmill
Inspired by a YouTube video, I added a walking treadmill under my desk. As a marathon runner, this helps with recovery and keeps me active throughout the day. It’s a brilliant way to stay fit while working.
Additional Accessories
Lastly, my fidget tool is a lifesaver for my ADHD. It helps me stay focused during meetings and work sessions, proving that small things can make a big difference.
Summary
Creating this perfect home office setup has been a journey of discovery, blending practicality with a touch of personal flair. I hope my experiences inspire you to craft a workspace that’s just right for you.
